UNAIDS criticizes Senegal's conviction of 9 gay men
UNAIDS, foreign health ministries and AIDS organizations worldwide are working to secure the release of nine men sentenced to eight years in jail for "indecent conduct and unnatural acts and membership of a criminal organization." Several of the men belonged to an AIDS service organization.
The UNAIDS press release quotes UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé; “There is no place for homophobia. Universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support must be accessible to all people in Senegal who are in need—including men who have sex with men. This will only happen if the men convicted are released and steps taken to rebuild trust with affected communities.”
