Gracia Violeta Ross is from La Paz, Bolivia. She has studied anthropology and completed a masters course on gender, sexual and reproductive health at the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia in Lima- Peru. Since discovering her HIV positive status in 2000, she has been an advocate for access to treatment and care for people living with HIV/AIDS in Bolivia and was the national chairperson for REDBOL (Bolivian Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS) from 2005-2007. She has led initiatives to end stigma and discrimination against PLHA at home and abroad, linking closely with other regional and international networks of PWAS. The daughter of an evangelical pastor, she has also worked as a resource person to the World Council of Churches, promoting the greater involvement of faith organization and churches in non-discriminatory approaches.

Violeta’s strong commitment to gender issues and gender-based violence, stemming from her experience as a rape survivor, are key inputs for her fight for gender equality in the context of HIV/AIDS in Bolivia and abroad. She represented Bolivian “civil society” in the last UN Special Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS) in 2006 and served as the international community program committee co-chair in the XVI International AIDS Conference, Since 2007 she has represented Latin America and the Caribbean as an alternate delegate in the NGO delegation of the Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) of UNAIDS. She is also a member of the developing countries NGO delegation representing Latin America and the Caribbean in the Global Fund against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria board; a member of the leadership council of the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS; and a task force member of GYCA Global Youth AIDS Coalition. Violeta speaks and writes widely on HIV/AIDS issues, as a person living with HIV, and as an anthropologist.
